Sons of Kemet

If there’s a band which sums up how exciting the UK jazz scene is at the moment it’s Sons of Kemet. Headed up by BBC Radio 3 New Generation ArtistShabaka Hutchings (saxes), with two mighty and intricate drummers Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford, the quartet’s unlikely line-up is topped by tuba star Oren Marshall.

The previous collaborations of the band members reads like a modern lexicon of creative music and includes Radiohead, Courtney Pine, Matthew Herbert, Zero 7, Polar bear and the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Expect idiosyncratic but danceable grooves, improvised twists and a passion and conviction which set this new band apart. Drawing on jazz tradition, Jamaican heritage and New Orleans street music, Jazzwise magazine describe Sons of Kemet as "easily the most exciting band …on the new BritJazz scene over the last year."

"One of the hippest of new UK bands……it's almost certain to dominate the best of lists at the end of the year" The Guardian

"An exuberant and playful band, they have rapidly developed a sound all of their own" londonjazznews.com

"They’re easily the most exciting band to come my way on the new Brit-Jazz scene over the last year" Jazzwise
